THE DATA
2024 HUD Point-in-Time (PIT) homelessness estimates, published through HUD's Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR).. The dataset includes state-level estimates on overall homelessness and women’s sheltered status

This dashboard highlights key national and state-level insights on homelessness among women.
KEY INSIGHTS
Women Represent a Significant Share, they accounted for approximately 39% of the total homeless population in the 2024 PIT dataset.
With roughly 303,000 women experiencing homelessness out of 771,000 people overall, women represent a substantial portion of the population captured in the snapshot.
California and New York account for a substantial share of the homeless population among the states analyzed.
California recorded roughly 187,000 people experiencing homelessness, followed by New York at approximately 158,000. The gap between these two states and the remaining Top 10 states is substantial.
The proportion of women within the homeless population differs considerably across states.
Among the Top 10 states by total homeless population, Massachusetts had the highest share of women at roughly 51%, while California was closer to 33%.
That distinction matters because population size and population composition tell different stories.
